Netflix Shows That Were Canceled After Season 1

It won’t be wrong to say that Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services in the world at the moment. Since it shifted from rental DVDs to online streaming, the movie and shows watching culture have changed in the world. Since its beginning in 2013, Netflix has released hundreds of seasons. The company also has a history of canceling shows. It gets annoying for the viewers who invest time in watching several episodes only for it to be canceled after the first season. Seeing a show that ended on a cliffhanger going to the ‘canceled after season 1’ list is infuriating.

Netflix canceled shows on their low performance, and budget issues last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Have fun by watching the shows using Kinetic Internet to have an amazing Netflix experience. Choose the package of your choice and enjoy the uninterrupted streaming of your favorite shows.

So, if Netflix is releasing several shows, it’s also canceling them left and right. Here are some of the shows that were canceled only after season 1.

The Society

Watching this show being canceled after season 1 physically hurt us, seriously. The society, inspired by the novel Lord of the Flies, was a thriller mystery about a group of teenagers. As they return from a school trip, they find out that all the adults have vanished. They are alone in the town. Now they have to figure out where and why they all went away.

They also have to make adjustments to their new reality and find a way to live with it.  Netflix renewed the series after season one. Netflix canceled the show due to the pandemic and retracted the renewal. Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger, guess we’ll never know what happened to those kids after all.

Seven Seconds

Seven Seconds revolves around the incident when a black teenager gets hit and critically injured at the hands of a white cop. This results in racial tensions and protests in the northeastern city. The accident is followed by a cover-up, which ensues more chaos. The assistant prosecutor wants to investigate the incident under hate crime and negligent homicide.

The case is getting dragged and it’s resulting in more and more chaos in the city. The show received good reviews from critics and has a 7.7/10 score on IMDB and 78% on Rotten Tomato. After canceling the show, Netflix submitted it for the Emmy Awards. Regina King went on to win the best actress in a limited series. The show was still not renewed.

Cursed

Released in July 2020, Cursed was led by Thirteen Reasons Why star Katherine Langford. The story was a retelling of the Arthurian Legend through the eyes of a young sorceress Nimue. Together with a charming mercenary Arthur, she leaves on a mission to save her people. The show spent a few weeks in the top 10 charts on Netflix.

After that, it dipped down. The main reason given was that the first few episodes are slow and people are quitting the show right then. Other than that, the audience and critics alike praised the cinematography. Netflix canceled the show one year after its release.

Standing Up

This French drama series was Netflix original and was canceled after the first season. The story is about a group of 4 friends who set out to make a name in the Stand-Up comedy industry. As they step into the professional world, they are faced with personal and professional setbacks. As a coping mechanism, they use their comic sense to get through it all.

Standing Up was canceled in May 2022 after being released in March 2022. The show did get positive reviews and was in the pre-production phase of season 2. The French magazine reported that Netflix had decided to pull the brakes on this one.

Julie and the Phantoms

Julie and the Phantoms is the story of a girl who had a passion for music. But after the untimely death of her mother, she loses all her motivation and passion for music. She accidentally summons the ghosts of three men who were once part of a 90s music band. Together, though a misfit group, they make a band that none was able to have before.

Julie and the Phantoms were released in September 2020, during the peak of the COVID-19 lockdown. As expected, this show gave the people trapped in their homes much-needed relief. The streaming figures were going well. After giving the fans hope for season 2, Netflix canceled the show after one year.

Teenage Bounty Hunters

Teenage Bounty Hunters came under Netflix’s chopping knife despite getting high praise from critics and a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show is about two sisters who despite attending an elite school become bounty hunters after a crazy night out. The show was praised to be hilarious and innovative in creating a teen drama series. Still, all the rave reviews and high scores couldn’t save the show. It was canceled in October 2020 after being released in August 2020.

Conclusion

Jotting down this list was as painful as it was when these shows got canceled. It’s very hard to predict which shows will continue and which will be canceled on Netflix. Surely, the cancellations just after one season attract mixed feelings and reviews from the audience.
