The 21st century has been largely defined by the rapid rise and improvement of technology. Cell phones, expanded internet and other devices have made day-to-day life so much simpler around the world.
That includes the sporting world. With so many useful tools at their disposal, sports teams are going great lengths to improve their overall performances by implementing special statistics/analytics and technology — and New York-based sports teams are no different.
As the sports betting landscape evolves, Arizona is at the forefront of the industry’s tech revolution, offering fans a wealth of new options for betting and engagement. This includes the abilities to place wagers on New York sports teams as well as play your favorite casino games (like poker, blackjack, roulette and slots) through the simple taps of your mobile devices.
So, how are your favorite Arizona and New York sports teams using wearable technology and analytics to enhance their performances? Let’s dive into it.

Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks may not have the same level of financial resources as some professional sports teams, but their front office and management staff are still committed to utilizing the latest wearable technology and deep analytics to gain a competitive edge.
Fans in Arizona are understandably eager for the team to return to the playoffs, as the Diamondbacks have not reached the World Series since their championship-winning season in 2001. However, the team has still managed to maintain a consistent record, with no losing seasons since 2009 and multiple postseason appearances in recent years.
This consistency is due in no small part to the efforts of GM Mike Hazen and his team, who have assembled top-notch coaching, scouting, and analytics staffs to keep the Diamondbacks competitive year after year.
For example the use of PitchCom is a wireless device that catchers use as a way to communicate with pitchers, as opposed to using hand signs that teams can easily pick up on. Manager Torey Lovullo gave it the thumbs up in June of last season.
The Diamondbacks have also made some notable additions to their front office this year, including former Boston Red Sox GM Dave Dombrowski and former Philadelphia Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. As reported by Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, these hirings were made in part to bolster the team’s analytics department.
While the Diamondbacks may not have the same financial resources as some other teams in the league, they are still committed to utilizing advanced analytics and technology to build a sustainable winner. It’s no longer enough to rely solely on big-name free-agent signings and trades.
With their new hires and a renewed focus on analytics and scouting, the Diamondbacks are poised to make a push for success in the coming seasons. Only time will tell if these efforts will pay off and bring the team back to the playoffs.
They’ve taken action. Now we see if it will take them back to the promised land.
New York Rangers
Over the years, the Rangers and New York Islanders have developed reputations as overachievers in the analytics community. Both clubs seem to be on the right side of puck luck, when advanced stats like Corsi For percentage, XGF (expected goals for) suggest they shouldn’t be as good as they are.
As long as they continue to win, though, neither the Rangers or Isles will apologize for defying the analytics.
In regards to wearable technology, the Rangers became an NHL leader on that front by agreeing to a partnership with Therabody in Dec. 2021.
Dr. Jason Werslund founced Therabody, which developed the useful “Theragun” devices. The Theraguns are used for training purposes and to help players avoid further injury risks to their muscles. Here’s how it was explained in the Rangers’ announcement of the partnership:
“Hockey players are constantly in motion, with intense spurts of sprinting followed by periods of sitting on the sidelines, which can cause athletes to experience muscle strains in a variety of areas. Theragun helps these athletes optimize their performance and whole-body wellness before, during, and after games. Similarly, RecoveryAir helps decrease inflammation and increase blood flow in the legs and feet.”
Therabody is the Rangers’ official recovery technology partner.
Buffalo Bills
The Bills have ranked near the top of ESPN’s annual survey on teams’ analytics usage. It is no wonder that this organization has been one of football’s best since the arrival of GM Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott in 2017.
Buffalo was tied for the fourth-most votes in 2022 on ESPN’s question “Which NFL team is the most analytically advanced?” and “Which team produces the highest level of analytics work?”
The Bills also got the fourth-most votes on “Which teams are among the five most analytically inclined?”
Beane has built together a deep analytics staff led by Director of Analytics & Application Development Luis Güílamo and Senior Director of Football Research Dennis Lock. Building a strong analytics department has helped the Bills identify players like Josh Allen, Tre’Davious White, Matt Milano, Gabe Davis and Jordan Poyer as some of the NFL’s best at their respective positions.
And Beane’s emphasis on building up this analysis department has the Bills in Super Bowl contention each year.
