5 Reasons Why Fire Hydrant Flow Testing is Crucial for Your Safety

Fire hydrant testing ensures that a city’s water distribution system works as it should. This helps uncover problems like closed valves, heavy pipe-wall deposits, or other infrastructure issues.

It can also verify the available flow capacity for a fire hydrant at various points in a water main. This information can be used for training, planning, and marking hydrants.

It Ensures Water Availability

A fire flow test verifies that a water main can deliver enough water to a fire department when it is needed for fire suppression. It involves measuring static, residual, and flow pressure at a water main’s outlet (pitot pressure).

It also helps a municipality color-code their hydrants according to their flow capacity to better assess their hydrant system when arriving on the scene of an emergency. Fire flow testing measures the rate of water at a specific hydrant. It identifies problems like closed valves or heavy piping wall deposits that limit the available gallons per minute. This information is critical to ensuring firefighters can access an adequate emergency water supply. Remove the gauge cap from a hydrant to begin a hydrant flow test. Slowly open the hydrant gate valve to purge air and close it once the water has been recorded on the pressure gauge. A hydrant with a nozzle that’s rounded, square, or projecting must be chosen for the test, as this will provide the most accurate reading. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that public fire hydrants be flow tested every five years. However, the NFPA clarifies that this does not mean every hydrant requires routine five-year testing.

It Keeps You and Your Family Safe

Performing a proper fire flow test is crucial to your safety. It lets you know that your hydrants can provide enough water and pressure to extinguish a fire. This information is vital for community planning, tactical firefighting, and water system design. It’s also one of the best ways to determine your distribution system’s performance. The proper fire flow test uses a cap gauge to measure the static pressure in the hydrant, the water flowing from it, and a pitot gauge to read the water’s flow rate at the outlet. It’s a complex process, but a good fire hydrant flow test should take less than 20 minutes. It saves you a few bucks in the long run.

It Saves You Money

Fire flow tests are important to any fire department’s maintenance schedule. They provide important information, such as the total amount of water flowing through a hydrant and the number of openings. They can also reveal if a fire hydrant is properly marked and indicate whether or not a hydrant needs a water storage tank. The fire flow test is a complex process that requires multiple instruments, including a cap gauge and a pitot gauge. Performing the test correctly and obtaining accurate flow rates can save the fire department time and money during a major emergency. It is a good idea to conduct a flow test annually.

It Saves You Time

Fire flow testing help ensure fire hydrants and water mains have sufficient flow to suppress a fire. This information is necessary to design fire protection systems for fire officers, engineers, architects, and sprinkler contractors.

To perform a fire flow test, field personnel must take static pressure readings at a residual hydrant and pitot gauge readings at the flow hydrant(s). Static pressure and pitot pressure should be taken simultaneously to avoid pressure surges.

It Saves Lives

Fire hydrant flow testing is essential for safety because it ensures enough water to fight a fire. This information is used for community planning, tactical firefighting, and the design of sprinkler systems.

Firefighters can’t extinguish a fire when a fire hydrant fails to open when needed. This could lead to death or injury.
